Recently, for our second turn at Penthouse Mouse we had some building ambitions. After the success of our installation at last years PHM with the paper curtains we jumped at the chance to create another for 2012. With part of the winter season focussing on the idea of ‘ghost’ garments, we decided to go all out of a cubby house made of tulle.

100 metres & 2 days later we had a lifesize ‘ghost’ house. Standing up on the table and holding up the walls are one thing but part of our love of working with the Moth Design crew on Penthouse Mouse is their use of lighting once the space is set up. It’s transformative, and regardless of what we may have planned when the space opens on opening night our installations get an entirely new atmosphere.

Click through for a gallery of the making of, it’s unfortunate that it was only the two of us making it because wrangling 100 metres of tulle is a site to behold!

[[Show as slideshow]]

Following on from Summer “a study in shifting structures”, we wanted to push the playfulness with clothing for winter. By splitting two classics (the trench, the blazer) into sums of their parts (body, sleeve, collar) two garments can now be collaged into an infinite number of combinations, giving the wearer the choice to customise to their mood. The way we wear our clothes and the interaction we have has always been central to above. and this collection allows for so much more in the way of individual choice.

We wanted to break up what you might need in a wardrobe into separate categories. What we ended up with are the base layer (shirt, pants, shirt dress), a ghost layer (thin tulle layering pieces) and the collage-ables (trench, blazer, accessory garments). In the same way you are able to build up or down your collage outerwear the same can be said for the other two categories.

The idea was to give the wearer a chance to start from a base, these being the items that are well-cut basics, a classic white shirt paired with a simple pant, for example. Add a second layer for detail and interest, being the ghost layers, and then depending on their need or mood incorporate a collage piece.

Choosing a new piece for your wardrobe should unlock a variety of possibilities, not just one single outfit. Even updating a piece becomes simpler, instead of investing in a whole new coat you can simply inject a new colour or texture into one element, say the sleeves, that gives you an entirely new palette to work with. The season is about a return to investing in items that you love, that you can see yourself wearing for a long time in a variety of ways.

This year we were most honoured to be chosen as a finalist for the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival National Designer Award. On Thursday March 1st we headed to the Sofitel Hotel for the final interview stage of judging.

The idea of presenting was daunting at first but within minutes of arriving and meeting the team producing the event and our peers competing the nerves faded away. What a lovely, down-to-earth and focussed bunch of people.

Our fellow competitors were Lui Hon, Michael Lo Sordo, Christopher Esber and Magdalena Velevska and all presented a strong vision for their brand. The judges are going to have a tough choice this year! Keep your fingers crossed for us on Friday March 9th for the presentation at Tiffany & Co.

When the opportunity to work on the No Home project came up again, we instantly thought of the crew we worked with last year. Those initial collaboration nerves have gone and the newfound trust means you can cut to the chase so much faster.

Adam & Jessie came up with a concept based on our notes for the season that felt like a lovely continuation of our first foray into film. We scheduled a 2 day shoot with 3 models and what has to be the-best-crew-on-earth. Last week we drove out and filmed in the suburbs, and despite having been on a film set last year, we were still amazed at what it takes.

We watched a preview the other day and got goosebumps, there is something so exciting about seeing our work translated and interpreted by new brains. And to have what was a joyous process result in such a fair and true representation of our collection is the best thing.

So, the most heartfelt thanks goes to the people who made it happen Jessie, Adam, Ed, CJ, Glenn, Brad, Olivia, Fiona, Zange, Jonas, Jonno and our models Juanita, Kelsi & Tory

[[Show as slideshow]] a little seed was sown way back in march of this year. our paper curtains we installed as part of penthouse mouse has more impact than we could have ever imagined. at the time, we loved them for what they were but didn’t think it would go beyond shed 4, docklands, especially since they were made of tissue paper. it felt like a moment in time. little did we know that the brains behind the jewellery gallery pieces of eight, Melanie Katsilidis, had other plans in mind. a few weeks after penthouse mouse she contacted us to see if we would like to install in the windows of her gallery. all it took was a quick trip past to convince us, the giant metal circle in the window was so impactful we couldn’t say no. we spent a few months figuring out the logistics of a new curtain, this time we wanted to print it using our burnout technique. neither of us had the heart to lose another curtain to fragility so paper was out of the question. developing a new way of printing for our winter 2012 collection opened up a way for us to make the curtain and so work began on the design. after some trial and error and a few teething problems the curtains were installed this past sunday, and we couldn’t be happier. they will be up in the pieces of eight main window in russell place for the next while, with an opening event on november 15th. come along to view them in person
