[[Show as slideshow]] a little seed was sown way back in march of this year. our paper curtains we installed as part of penthouse mouse has more impact than we could have ever imagined. at the time, we loved them for what they were but didn’t think it would go beyond shed 4, docklands, especially since they were made of tissue paper. it felt like a moment in time. little did we know that the brains behind the jewellery gallery pieces of eight, Melanie Katsilidis, had other plans in mind. a few weeks after penthouse mouse she contacted us to see if we would like to install in the windows of her gallery. all it took was a quick trip past to convince us, the giant metal circle in the window was so impactful we couldn’t say no. we spent a few months figuring out the logistics of a new curtain, this time we wanted to print it using our burnout technique. neither of us had the heart to lose another curtain to fragility so paper was out of the question. developing a new way of printing for our winter 2012 collection opened up a way for us to make the curtain and so work began on the design. after some trial and error and a few teething problems the curtains were installed this past sunday, and we couldn’t be happier. they will be up in the pieces of eight main window in russell place for the next while, with an opening event on november 15th. come along to view them in person

The first story available is the shifted collar blouse and dresses, available in two colours, the soft drape fabric coupled with all the re-postioned elements of a classic white shirt make these great warm weather pieces. The shifted collar has played a starring role in above. seasons to come, along with the accessory garments d-i-y scarf collars but the ss 2011 is the very first incarnation, certainly won’t be the last.

The slightest adjustment can make all the difference. At above we often use sticky tape to build on a toile so that the guess work of creating that perfect proportion is eliminated with ease. It saves time and if your first try is no good you can take the tape off and begin again….. A trick of the trade from above to you!

[[Show as slideshow]]we’ve been pre-occupied at the studio with a big move, after 5 years we are finally moving into a new space. next door. we knocked down a wall and are busy re-fitting the place so that in a few weeks you will be able to come in and see the whole collection in the flesh, we’ll keep you posted about that but in the meantime let’s talk a little bit about what else we’ve been doing. having our own showroom shifted the way we think about out collections, being able to make things and offer them direct all year round has made us consider our clothes as stories rather than seasons. and the predominant story of our moment is the idea of collageable garments. we’ll talk more in depth about it once they are ready to go but to give you a small taste of the ideas we’ve taken some snapshots of how we see it working so far.

in an effort to shed some more light on how things are made we’ve come up with a wee project for a sunday afternoon. we’re making available for purchase in our online store ($15 AUD) two of our above. collar patterns along with some extensive step by step video instuction so you can make your own scarf collars. the idea is that you can re-imagine an old scarf, one you may already have or one you pick up at an op shop, and turn it into a new accessory garment. you’ll need an A4 printer to print out the pdf patterns, a sewing machine and some time.

With work on next winter 2012 underway the discussions in the studio turned to textures. Every, single time Nyssa goes anywhere near an op shop she inevatibly comes away with some knitwear. The thought of leaving behind all those amazing knits and textures just because they are in the wrong shapes just kills her. She’s amassed a pretty substantial collection and is always cutting into them to breathe to collage into other, new shapes which breathe new life into the knits. With the cold snap just hitting Melbourne we were talking about that age old dillemma of wanting to be warm and cosy but still feel like we’re actually dressed. The solution was these ‘Jumper Socks’, a quick afternoon cutting and sewing them up and we both walked away with some super cosy, slightly funny socks that I have a feeling will come in handy this winter. Next time your at an op shop and can’t go past a knit, keep us in mind, happy to do some custom work![[Show as slideshow]]

in the spirit of making that we’ve taken to this year, we wanted to communicate our summer season in more than just the standard photo format. we made this mini swatch guide books to help illustrate the season and also be the beginnings of an archive. it’s getting harder and harder to keep track of what we did and when, so this will be a nice little thing we can file away to keep a record. the actual bookbinding is really simple, and thanks to some handy friends they didn’t take that long to construct, just seems like a nicer solution then shoving the scraps into endless storage boxes.[[Show as slideshow]]
